If you are reading this then you probably don’t need to be talked into liking coins! The chances are this is already your hobby and it gives you a whole lot of pleasure too. But do you know all of the great things about numismatics?
Being Knowledgeable
Understanding coins does have its merits for a number of reasons. To begin with, it can be a great subject for conversation and a few people may even be impressed with your numismatical knowledge! You will soon learn that even if someone you meet does not collect for their self, they will still be interested in your collection.
Street Cred
It isn’t just having the right trainers that gives you kudos (actually it really, really ISNT anyway!!!!! Lol), coins can make you THE guy (or girl) to know! Honestly, I mean this. People seem to really like having someone around who understands coins and a lot of people just love to ask questions about different things. It may even mean you become a babe magnet 😉 lol.
Making Money
Coins can be a great investment as well as a fascinating hobby! Once you have some idea of how it all works you will also get to know the best things to buy….. and a little further down the line you may well like the idea of selling a few items online. Even if this seems a thousand miles from where you are now you need to remember; even the mightiest of oaks began with a weeny acorn (well the adage goes something like that anyhow…..).
Meeting People
Coin collecting is a great way of making new friends. In fact, you will not even have to try very hard as this will normally just happen naturally. Once you begin trading with others or chatting about your latest additions online the rest will often fall into place effort-free!
Learning Stuff
Because a lot of coin releases commemorate certain things, you are destined to learn about a great many things on your numismatistical voyage! So, if you were pants at history while you were at skool, this is your second chance lol. No, seriously, seeing historical figures, buildings or events on coins can often make things more real – which means that it will have more of an impact and a greater chance of being stored in your brain! Oh, and for the record I was pants at history. In fact, I bloody hated it proper!!!!

All the above is true especially the learning, i.e. 1666 Great Fire of London, (£2), 1620 the Mayflower sailed, (£2) the NHS is 75 years old (50p) to state just a few. These are great reference points and help to retain the important dates in history. Something to show the grandkids and get them involved.

Not sure about being a Johnny Depp lookalike (aka babe magnet) but I do get asked a lot of questions about coins – usually ‘how much is this rare coin worth’ and I let them down gently when they have been checking the listed prices on ebay instead of the actual sold prices!
