‘Minty’ The Minty-Mint Piggy-Wig – A Fable

Once upon a time, ‘Minty’ the piggy bank went on sale at The Royal Mint.  And there he sat on his own special webpage in all of his plain white pottery splendour.

Of course, a few of us were a little puzzled as to why RM had chosen to have their logo emblazoned on a hog’s rear end of all places…. unless this was their way of telling us something?  (See definition below…..) but ultimately, most folk paid little credence to this.  And who could blame them?  After all, there are far more important things in life than pondering on why such a high-brow company would want their name branded onto the hindmost parts of a ceramic animal.

Anyhow, time moved on and Minty got older.  Over the months he slowly grew and the inevitable occurred – he got greedy.  Yes!!!  Piggy-wigs are well known for…. well, making piggies of themselves.  And Minty was no exception.  No longer satisfied with being so plain and getting a minimal amount of web interest, he decided to spice things up by covering himself with appealing designs to coincide with the release of certain coins (mainly child-targeted ones).  This way he would get far more attention, far more traffic to his page and far more yummy coins inserted into the hungry slot on his back.

Minty thought it would be really smart having lots of different outfits to wear.  He had actually got the idea since being inspired to watch ‘Mr Benn’ after the release of the Guernsey fifty pences in 2021.  (However, he was going to keep this quiet and make out he had come up with the whole thing himself….)

So, as the months rolled by, Minty adorned himself in all manner of pretty illustrations – ‘The Snowman’, ‘Peter Rabbit’, ‘Mr Men’…… he even came up with a very fetching Christmas design for himself (masses of photoshoot sessions I am telling you).  He also devised a rather shrewd plan of making himself ‘exclusive’ by only appearing a limited number of times in each outfit.  Because if this part worked and he went up in value on the secondary market then each time he got dressed in something different, people would be queuing up to spend money.

As it turned out, the idea did work.  Minty the Mint pig is now in huge demand and people are paying stoopid money for ‘limited editions’ of him every day.  And let’s be honest here; he wasn’t exactly cheap to begin with!  It does kind of make you wonder where this will all stop.  But there is also something more…..

Has Minty the piggy bank detracted from what everything was about in the first place do you think?  I mean, wasn’t this supposed to be about COINS?

It is a matter of opinion of course, but perhaps The Royal Mint have made a pig’s ear of it all…..
