The Westminster Collection have just released their latest ‘non legal tender’ fifty pence shaped coin and it is a stunner! This is very much down to the clever idea of inverting the whole premise of most coin designs. By making the background very detailed and the main object in the work quite plain, this will immediately cause the primary feature to stand out. The result is genuinely striking.
Now…… when I first saw this release I experienced the strangest feeling. You see, just for a moment I could have sworn I was looking at the recent TGBCH non legal tender fifty pence shaped coin (and it is a stunner!). It is uncannily similar to say the least. And if you look more closely at the background it is almost identical. They are also both themed around Ancient Egypt. Spooky!
In all fairness, I am not too sure what to say or feel right now. I think I am perhaps still in shock. You see, it was me who designed the version for TGBCH….. (mine is titled ‘Anubis‘ by the way and is the first in the ‘Egyptian Gods’ series I created).
At this point in time, there are a number of options open to me when it comes to my reaction –
- I could take the Mardy Road (which leads down into Tantrumville) and feel very indignant that someone has half-inched my sly design technique, if not an actual part (as near as damn it) of my coin
- I could adopt the mindset that my coin must be very good indeed for the mighty Westminster Collection to (ahem) ‘borrow’ it and use it as ‘inspiration’ for their own. That would actually be quite a compliment wouldn’t? Big respect!
- I could take a few hours out to look into what rights I have regarding copyright. Or perhaps WM have made sure they have this one covered by making a suitable number of changes with their own design? But plagiarism is a serious thing you know…
Hmmmm.
Well, I think I am going to opt for number two on my list – along with a few small additions . For WM to create a design so similar to mine (which went on sale a couple of weeks before theirs) I must be getting something right. But that isnt all….. this means they must be looking at TGBCH website!
Hee Hee Hee
‘Job well done’ springs to mind. Because this leads on to something else as well. If they are making a point of dipping in over here to keep an eye on things then TGBCH is clearly moving in the right direction. It is also being taken pretty seriously by The Westminster Collection.
Perhaps they had a look at the list of domains up for sale while they were visiting too 😀
I have always loved the story of ‘David and Goliath’…..
