Completer medallions (or medals – whichever you prefer) are not something all collectors bother with. But is your set of coins a full set without one???
Over the years there have actually been quite a few different completer medallions. Some of the first were the 2011 Olympics one (and there are two versions of this!) along with those for the ‘Great British Coin Hunt’ albums (50p, £1 and £2). Since those there have also been a few others.
Whilst some completer medallions will rocket in value (the Olympic one currently sells for around £50 for example) others will remain around the same price. So basically, while some are cheap enough to buy…. and others really aren’t! Precisely why some go up to stoopid money and others don’t remains a mystery…….
Of course, choosing to collect completer medallions will automatically make your hobby more expensive than it is. And do you really need to collect them anyway? Some people will only see the actual coins as being important. But other people cannot see their collection as being ‘complete’ without those special medallions…. It is an awkward one and very much down to personal preference.
The truth is there is probably no right or wrong with any of this. And how you store your collection will also play a part in what you decide to do. Most completer medallions will arrive in their own packaging. So, if your collection is all housed in capsules for example, this will immediately create a pickle for you! You would think that with something like coin collecting, everything would be nice and uniform. The problem is it really isn’t! Some completers will be housed in card, some in packs and a few in capsules. Oh, it really is a headache, isn’t it?
The other issue (also along the same lines) is the physical size of each actual completer. Some will be around the same diameter as a 50p or £2 coin…… but others are mahoosive great things that are more like £5 coin status.
It is a paradox, a curveball and an enigma. And it is also a subject I should probably have included in my ‘Coin Collecting Quandries’ posts! Whatever you decide to do, I wish you the very best of luck!!!
