Making Poo-h Potter-y

Always remember…. Poo-h can be moulded into any shape that suits! ‘

Once The Royal Mint’s ‘Beatrix Potter Flagship’ had basically sunk (after being forced to sail for far, far too long), they needed some new vessel to take its place…..   ‘Ship ahoy! For it be the ‘HMS Milne Milker’, me hearties!!!’  Yes, RM had found another timeless series of timeless children’s stories just waiting to be used (thoroughly) for their coins.  And this time they were going to do things differently…..

At least with the Beatrix Potter coins there was a chance of completing your collection without having to make any purchases.  Well, at least that was possible until it got to 2019 and RM took it upon themselves to make the Peter Rabbit fifty pence from that year (and the next year too!) ‘purchase only’……  Sly and a little underhand when people had spent so long finding all of the others in their everyday change.

‘Yes, RM had found another timeless series of timeless children’s stories just waiting to be used (thoroughly) for their coins’

So, with their Winnie the Pooh coins, Mint decided to make these ‘purchase only’ from the off.  Yes, they had trailed this questionably dirty tactic towards the latter part of Potter and it had clearly brought in some extra dollar (much needed I am guessing as the bigwigs at RM will no doubt be living on the breadline lol).

Of course, the other big bonus this time around was the advent of colour brilliant uncirculated.  This effectively meant an extra line of coins to sell.  Not everyone can afford to buy silver proofs (previously the only way to obtain colour versions with coins such as these) so coloured brilliant uncirculated filled a nice little gap 😉

It was not a complicated business equation really :

1 – think of something suitably twee which will appeal to your target audience

2 – create a range of products based around this

3 – market it in such a way that people MUST spend money to complete their collection

4 – (sub-mission) if possible fill an addiction niche along the way

So there we have it, this is how HMS Milne Milker came to sail the seven seas here in Coinworld.  But don’t be fooled into thinking that this will be the last such vessel to be launched by The Royal Mint…..  I mean there are still other quaint and middle class orientated children’s classics to be considered.  I foresaw a Winnie The Pooh series of coins about four years ago; not because I am psychic, but because once you think in the same way as RM it is clear as day.

  1. Completely agree, there are more and more coins made now and not released which means you have to buy them, like the new Harry Potter collection. Can’t even remember the last £2 to enter circulation!! RM know that us collectors will buy these BUNC coins so keep churning them out with any old crap on them!!
