So here we are again with some of my own personal favourite rare coins from different territories. Today I am training my sights on treasures from Gibraltar….. 🙂
‘Hercules’ Series £2 Coins (First issued 1997-2000 and reminted in 2020)
These twelve coins are well known amongst collectors. And coins from the first batch sell for anything between £150-£250 each.
It is difficult to be too precise, but the mintage for those reissued in 2020 is known to be lower than the original ones. However, they currently only sell for around £60-£100 each.
It is also worth noting that in the 2020 set, there was a cock-up with ‘The Mares of Diomedes’. A die in the machine had to be changed during production meaning that some of these came out with a frosted finish. Needless to say, ‘Mares’ is normally the most expensive coin in the set to buy. And some collectors will also not be happy unless they own both frosted and unfrosted versions.
‘We Unite as One’
A coin that was apparently issued to celebrate unity in the worldwide fight against Covid. Oddly enough, very few of these were even seen for quite a while when first released. Rumour has it someone in China bought most of those which were minted.
There is also an error version of this coin after someone failed to spell ‘commemorate’ correctly in production and a small number got out before the person responsible was found, reprimanded and had their pocket money stopped. The standard coin sells for around £30 while the numpty version with the misspelling goes for £150-£200.
’80 Years of Commandos’
This was a more unusual release as it was silver plated. It was also overlooked by a lot of collectors simply because (due to proper shite photos on the sale page) it looked like one of those ‘commemorative coins’ that is not actually legal tender. However, the truth is that this IS legal tender and it is also low mintage (8,000).
It is actually a nice coin and I am not quite sure how Koin Club managed to make it look so enormously bad. That takes real talent.
