Now, I need to be jolly careful how I go about writing this review. You see I am not a fan of the Royals and I am most certainly not a fan of Royal-orientated coins either. However, I do understand that we are all different and what floats my boat will go on to sink another person’s……
So, this £5 coin has been created to celebrate ‘The 40th Birthday of HRH The Duke of Cambridge’. Okay, so far so good…. but now the wheels are about to fall off. As far as I am concerned anyhow. Speaking from a design perspective, I see Thomas T. Docherty’s portrait on the coin as nothing short of dreadful. Why? Well, because I personally do not think it captures the likeness of Prince William particularly well. In fact, that is perhaps a little unfair. If I am going to be more accurate then I would say it doesn’t actually look a whole lot like Prince William at all. But please remember, this is merely the opinion of one man.
I would also like to say that the background doesn’t really work for me so well either. I get that Mr Docherty wanted to use two different fonts to express two different things but…. neither of these are especially nice and nor do they really tie-in with the foreground very well either.
Apart from these minor flaws this is quite a nice coin and I am sure it will look very handsome in the right setting.
