What a Little Bird Told me (When I Became King)

A new monarch and a new era for coins. And as a matter of course and tradition he faces the opposite way to his late mother. But do you know about the quirky little ‘hidden’ detail on our new coinage?

I must admit, when I first heard about this I did think someone was pulling my plonker. In all fairness and in my defence, I have seen all manner of ‘minting errors’ or ‘hidden images’ during my stint at collecting. So, I did initially take this latest story with a large pinch of salt.

If you look closely at the King‘s ear (where it joins his cheek), you will see a small bird sideways on. Furthermore, it appears to be perched quite happily on HRH’s generous lobe. And once you have seen this you will probably never be able to un-see it; a rather strange Royal Optical Illusion. To be honest this is also a very impressive one. But whether Martin Jennings incorporated this on purpose whilst creating his portrait of King Charles III is unclear. Personally I think it has come about purely by chance.

For me, the strangest part of all is this – tabloids are currently full of this story (ALL contain the same ‘eagle-eyed collectors have spotted’ sentence – shudder) yet no-one has mentioned that it is also present on our new stamps. A bit odd (not to mention plain old dumb) when the illusion is even more apparent on these…. Perhaps eagle-eyed collectors have failed to spot th–
